At Strive, leadership is not merely about holding a position of authority – it is about fostering personal growth, building meaningful connections, and inspiring others to achieve their full potential. Few individuals exemplify this philosophy more than our Middle School Clinic Co-Directors, Breanna LeCompte (Coach Bree) and Nora Reynolds (Coach Reynolds). While their paths to Strive were unique, their commitment to its mission remains steadfast, driven by the profound impact they witness daily in both themselves and their student-athletes.
A Strive Start: How They Found Their Way
Coach Bree discovered Strive through a colleague who had previously worked with the organization. Initially intrigued yet uncertain, she became part of the Strive team, a decision that has since defined her professional journey.
Coach Nora’s introduction to Strive dates back to 2017, when a college teammate connected her to the nonprofit. With a strong background in sports and leadership development, she was drawn to Strive’s mission of utilizing athletics as a catalyst for personal growth. What began as an internship evolved into a transformative experience, influencing both her career trajectory and personal development.
What They Love About Strive’s Curriculum
For both coaches, Strive’s curriculum is not just a set of guidelines – it is a mindset and a framework for continuous improvement.
Coach Bree resonates strongly with the concept of a growth mindset, recognizing its value in encouraging resilience and adaptability. She acknowledges her tendency toward self-criticism and appreciates how Strive’s philosophy encourages reflection, learning, and forward progress rather than dwelling on setbacks.
Coach Nora appreciates the experiential nature of Strive’s curriculum, where leadership principles are not merely discussed but actively practiced. She values the structured yet dynamic approach, allowing student-athletes to internalize key concepts through real-time application.
The Power of Connection
Both coaches agree that the most rewarding aspect of their roles lies in the relationships they cultivate with student-athletes.
For Coach Bree, it is the small yet meaningful moments – such as remembering a student’s name or acknowledging their efforts – that build trust and demonstrate genuine care.
Coach Nora finds fulfillment in the long-term connections she fosters. She takes pride in seeing former student-athletes return to Strive events and cherishes the friendships that form among participants from diverse backgrounds.
Leadership, the Strive Way
Coach Bree views leadership as an authentic expression of self, emphasizing the importance of creating an inclusive space where student-athletes feel empowered to develop their strengths.
For Coach Nora, leadership is defined as “the intentional use of one’s unique abilities and strengths to create environments that enable others to excel.” To her, effective leadership is rooted in community, collaboration, and a shared commitment to mutual growth.
A Lasting Impact
For both coaches, Strive is more than an organization – it is an integral part of their personal and professional identities.
Coach Bree applies Strive’s principles in her day-to-day life beyond the athletic setting, continuously striving for self-improvement and innovative thinking.
Coach Nora attributes significant career and personal growth to Strive. Initially focused on international relations and public policy, her experience with Strive redirected her path toward education, social work, and therapy. Strive provided the first space where she felt encouraged to engage in discussions about emotions and personal challenges, a perspective that has influenced every facet of her life. The relationships she has built within Strive have become an invaluable support system, reinforcing her commitment to the organization’s mission.
Why Strive Matters
At its core, Strive’s Middle School Clinic is dedicated to shaping young athletes into confident, resilient leaders both on and off the court and field. Through its emphasis on growth mindset, meaningful connections, and purposeful leadership, the program fosters an enduring impact that extends far beyond sports.
Strive is more than an organization- it is a philosophy, a community, and a force for lifelong development. Thanks to dedicated leaders like Coach Bree and Coach Reynolds, its influence continues to expand, empowering future generations to find the best in themselves in order to inspire the best in those around them.
